Hackney Depot reverses toilet gender imbalance

The original building was completed in 1981 as ancillary accommodation for bus drivers and depot workers with management and banking facilities.

We originally justified the ratio of male to female toilet facilities as necessary due to the high number of male bus drivers but this view was challenged after reading ‘Invisible Women–Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men’ by Caroline Criado Perez.

We reviewed the original provision and noted:
The male toilet block had 8 cubicles, 4 urinals and 2 showers
The female toilet block had 3 cubicles and 2 showers. The managerial toilets were male only!

To give a fairer provision we have swapped the male and female toilets and with our friends at Rebel Rebel have turned the obsolete urinals into beautiful plant features.
